Our instructors help students achieve their goals, both on and off the fencing strip. They recognize that each student is different, and employ various styles in order to engage students and help them reach their goals. When our students are successful, they develop the self-confidence and self-esteem to continue fulfilling their potential in all areas of their lives.
Joseph has been involved in fencing for over twenty years, and is entering his thirteenth year as a coach. He was a member of three World Championship Cadet teams in 1996 (Tournai, Belgium), 1997 (Tenerife, Spain), and 1998 (Valencia, Venezuela). Joseph was the 1998 Under-17 Junior Olympic Champion, 1999 Under-20 Junior Olympic Champion, and the 1999 Under-19 Summer National Champion. In addition, he has earned over 40 Cadet, Junior, and Senior national medals. Joseph is a two-time NCAA All-American, and in 2001, he was a member of the 2001 NCAA Championship team.
Joseph’s students have earned more than 25 national medals in foil, epee, and saber, and held national rankings in all three weapons. His students have attended Brandeis University, Brown University, Cornell University, Harvard University, New York University, Northwestern University, and University of Pennsylvania. Joseph’s coaching philosophy focuses on group training and support in order to achieve individual goals.
He enjoys working with fencers, both recreational and competitive, in the FIT, youth, junior, collegiate, and adult age categories in all three weapons.
A nationally ranked foil fencer from 1998-2005 under the tutelage of Polish master
Marek Wyszynski, John is a veteran teacher and a parent himself. He brings all these areas of his expertise into play working with the adults, teens and children of New Amsterdam Fencing Academy, creating an atmosphere of fun, dedication, and love of fencing.
John is certified by the United States Fencing Coaches Association as a Moniteur in all three weapons. John sees himself, first and foremost, as an educator for fencers of all levels and abilities, in addition to being the trainer of elite athletes.
Dennis has been coaching for the better part of two decades and in his time has produced numerous National Medalists and International Fencers. He has produced students who have been recruited to the finest Universities and Colleges. Coach Dennis also runs the Kolakowski Sabre Academy out of the Phoenix Center in Poughkeepsie, NY and Silver City Fencing in Wallingford, CT and is working towards developing a stong regional powerhouse in Sabre Fencing for an area that has not traditionally been a known for it’s Sabre Fencers.
